Evaluation of Plant Materials for the Control of Leafworm (Acraea terpsicore L.) On Jute Mallow (Corchorus olitorius L.) in Lapai Southern Guinea Savannah of Nigeria

Jute mallow, (Corchorus olitorius L.) is an important vegetable grown in most part of subsaharan Africa and classified as Neglected Underutilized Species (NUS). But insect pests are serious hindrance to its production. The present research was conducted at the teaching farm Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State growing season 2017 - 2018. aimed evaluating efficacy three plant materials (alligator pepper (Aframomum melegueta K. Schum,), black (Piper nigrum neem seed (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) for control Acraea terpsicore (L.) (Leaf worm) on jute mallow. were grounded separately into powder weighed 100g per litre water. A day spraying, soaked water 24hours thereafter sieved with a muslin cloth further filtered Whatman filter paper remove all fine particles. extracts then transferred sprayer onward spraying plant. Before number leafworms counted, count repeated after spraying. done 3days interval. numbers damaged leaves also counted 4, 6 8 week planting (WAP). At end research, extract caused significantly highest mortality each spray least WAP, followed by pepper. contrarily, alligator pepper, other hand, had no significant effect leaf worm. presents worms WAP. Conclusively, can be encouraged used this cheaper than synthetic pesticides not toxic man his environment.
